VIENNA
Vienna City Image

There is so much to enjoy in Vienna in addition to football! From the Sunken City to the Kaiserschloss castle, from the Wurstelprater entertainment park – so rich in tradition – to the new amusement quarters, from dancing to shopping – Vienna awaits you.

The Sunken City – a sport, entertainment and pub/bar area on the New Danube, also hosts Vienna’s most popular bathing beach. The Old Danube contrasts particularly with other parts of the Vienna skyline. There are terraced restaurants and lidos, and boats to rent for agreeable stretches on the water. At the end of June, the biggest party in Europe takes place - the Danube Island festival - with an array of live music to see for free.

Along the Ringstrasse grand boulevard, you will find operas, museums, the Parliament, City Hall and Burgtheater (the former imperial court theatre), Votivkirche church und Stock Exchange (Börse), as well as numerous palaces from the imperial period. In Schönbrunn, you can wander through flower gardens, tree-lined avenues und lively fountains.

Various attractions await you in the Prater amusement park with its world-renowned giant wheel. The Ernst-Happel-Stadion, which will host six UEFA EURO 2008™ matches as well as the final, is also situated here.

The Stadtbahnbogen along the No.6 Metro line has numerous bars/pubs featuring DJs or live acts. In the 'Bermuda Triangle' in the Old City, one bar follows another.

And we should not forget the Mariahilfer Strasse, Vienna's modern shopping precinct, with its international fashion chains and chic boutiques. Elegance ist the key in the Old City shops on the Karntner Strasse, the Kohlmarkt precinct on the Graben. In the summer, just as in the Emperor’s times, the Original Hoch- und Deutschmeister play and march to music while entering the Inner Courtyard of the Hofburg Palace at 11:00am on Saturdays.

In the Museum Quarter, the interior court of the Cultural Quarter is a popular open-air location with bars and guest gardens. In Grinzing and other Heurigenorten (a place where you can sample new, young wines), you will be able to toast your favourite team's successes with Viennese wine.

A fine way to discover Vienna is to purchase the 72-hour Wien-Karte (Vienna Ticket), which gives you 200 special benefits. The Wien-Karte is available at the Vienna Tourist Information Office, at your hotel or at sales points on Vienna's transport routes.

Vienna - Ernst-Happel-Stadion

Stadium: Vienna - Ernst-Happel-Stadion

Vienna's Ernst-Happel-Stadion is graded in the UEFA list of recognised stadiums as a five-star venue.

It has up to 50,000 covered seats and, after some general renovation work, now meets all the latest guidelines in terms of technology and infrastructure. It has often been used to stage finals of international competitions, including the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League final. The stadium is situated in the Prater, one of Vienna's largest recreation areas, in the immediate vicinity of the Danube.

The stadium has excellent transport connections. It is close to the international airport of Vienna-Schwechat, can be reached by tram or bus, and will have its own underground connection to the city of Vienna by 2007.
